What-A-Burger in downtown Concord is a straightforward fast food spot that leans heavily on classic Americana burger joint vibes, though with an interior that feels a bit dated rather than nostalgically retro. Its location near the courthouse makes it a convenient stop for a quick bite during lunch hours or a casual dinner for locals looking to stay close to the city center.

The menu offers a variety of hearty plates centered around burgers and fried sides, with standouts like the What-A-Burger with cheese and bacon, hushpuppies, and the Chuckwagon Plate. Portions tend to be moderate, and while the fries get positive nods for crispiness, they may come in smaller servings than some expect. Breakfast options are available earlier in the day and include simple egg plates paired with coffee, catering well to those seeking a no-fuss start to their morning.

Food here strikes a balance between homey and no-frills. Burgers are not fresh-ground on site but tend to be cooked thoroughly, paired with fresh toppings and a slightly sweet bun that adds a subtle twist to the classic burger experience. There’s also a flexible approach for dietary needs, such as accommodating gluten-free requests by serving burgers without buns in separate containers—something appreciated by local diners.

The atmosphere at What-A-Burger is casual and unpretentious, with friendly staff making the service experience welcoming, even if the pace can be a bit slow during busy times. This isn’t a spot for a leisurely, trendy outing, but rather for enjoying simple, satisfying fast food with a slice of small-town North Carolina comfort. It fits well as a stop for courthouse workers, families, and anyone craving a laid-back burger and fries without the hustle of more modern or upscale spots.

Best time to visit: Lunchtime during weekdays for a quick, familiar meal or early mornings for breakfast before the day picks up. Expect a no-frills dining room with a quietly local crowd that appreciates straightforward, classic American fast food.

Stopped by for a quick lunch. Parking is good. Interior is dated, but not like good vibes 1950s dated, just dated. Ordered a WHATABURGEE with cheese and bacon. The bun was really good, tad sweet taste. Burger was good. Not a fresh hand pattied burger, so it was cooked well. I like my burgers med-rare. Toppings were fresh. Fries were small portion. I think I spent $17, not a great value, but not too bad.

Everytime we go here the employees are so nice! The food is absolutely delicious and the Witch Doctors are made on point and just right!!! I can't go to what a burger without getting one. I'm also celiac and don't react to their fries which are crispy just the way I like them and they accomodate no bun. They put my burger or chicken made to order in it's own container and on a small paper plate to absorb moisture which is fantastic! Nowhere else has done that for me. The Witchdoctors are made just the way I like them with pickle juice, pickles, and soda YUM!!!! The fries are packaged separately as well!! The location is also convenient if you go during the day and want to walk the shops or Art Museum after. Nice atmosphere.
